Our Work

BFOH delivers community-centred programmes across food security, education, health, and welfare to create sustainable, measurable impact.

What We Do

Healing through Compassion and Action.

At BFOH, our programmes are designed to respond to immediate community needs while creating long-term, sustainable impact. Guided by principles of accountability, partnership, and compassion, we focus on initiatives that restore dignity, promote self-reliance, and strengthen families.

Our Four Workstreams

Food Security

BFOH addresses hunger through a Food Security Workstream that combines immediate food relief with long-term community empowerment.

Our weekly Feeding Scheme provides nutritious hot meals every Saturday to 350–400 beneficiaries in communities including Berea, Yeoville, Hillbrow, and Bellevue, with additional clothing and essentials distributed when available, supported by volunteers and church partners.

To promote self-sufficiency, we are expanding into urban farming initiatives that equip communities to grow food, improve nutrition, and generate income.

Building on the success of our COVID-19 Food Parcel Drive, which supported families across Johannesburg, Alexandra, Tembisa, and Midrand, we are preparing to revive this initiative to assist households during times of crisis.

Education

Education is a cornerstone of empowerment and long-term transformation. While the Bursary Scheme remains a legacy initiative of the Bethesda Methodist Mission, BFOH continues to support its governance, fundraising, and accountability processes.

Our education work focuses on strengthening learning outcomes and preparing young people for a rapidly changing world through:

  • Maths and Literacy Support Programmes

  • AI and Robotics Exposure Initiatives to build future-ready skills

  • Early Childhood Development (ECD) Programmes that establish strong educational foundations

The bursary initiative supports learners from low-income households, including child-headed and pensioner-led families, with a focus on Grades 8–12 learners who demonstrate academic potential.

Through education, we create opportunity, nurture potential, and contribute to the reduction of poverty and unemployment.

Health & Wellness

Launched in response to the challenges highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, BFOH’s Health & Wellness Workstream focuses on preventive healthcare, early detection, and health education.

In 2024, BFOH committed to implementing quarterly chronic disease screenings for diabetes and hypertension at selected homes and shelters within our community. These screenings promote early detection, regular monitoring, and treatment adherence.

Key initiatives include:

  • Quarterly Chronic Disease Screenings

  • ECD Health and Nutrition Programmes

  • Annual Dental Screening for Children

  • Community Health Education focused on lifestyle and preventive care

Through these initiatives, BFOH empowers individuals to take control of their health and wellbeing.

Welfare

The Welfare Workstream reflects BFOH’s commitment to compassionate care and holistic support. It addresses both immediate socio-economic needs and the longer journey toward emotional and economic healing.

Each year, BFOH coordinates outreach initiatives such as:

  • Annual Clothing and Winter Blanket Drives

  • Healing and Wellness Sessions that promote emotional recovery and faith-based support

  • Entrepreneurial and Skills Training Projects that equip participants with tools to rebuild livelihoods

By combining care, healing, and opportunity, our welfare initiatives continue to uplift vulnerable households and inspire hope.

Our Impact

Hands in Prayer

Across all four workstreams, BFOH’s programmes are designed to deliver measurable, meaningful impact - strengthening families, empowering individuals, and building resilient communities.

Every meal served, learner supported, and life uplifted is a step toward lasting transformation.
